While following our guide on
How to Bulk Import New Students, you may run across a few common errors that prevent students from being added. This article focuses on resolving these common problems during the import process.
Follow the recommendations below to ensure a smooth experience when adding your students. If none of these tips help, though, feel free to reach out to our helpdesk at any time.
Refreshing the Page
If the table of students does not update after importing, try refreshing your browser page. Sometimes, browser caching or blocked scripts may prevent the table from refreshing automatically. A simple page refresh can often resolve this issue.
Adjusting Separator Options
When importing data from a spreadsheet, ensure you are using the correct separator options. If you encounter issues with the import, try experimenting with different separator options, such as commas, semicolons, or tabs. Changing the separator can sometimes help with importing data correctly.
Make sure you are pasting the data normally into the bulk importer. Using plain text pasting (e.g., CTRL + Shift + V) may cause issues with the import process. Instead, use the regular paste function (e.g., CTRL + V) to paste the data.
Understanding Import Error Messages
The bulk importer will generally provide error messages indicating any issues with the import. Pay close attention to these messages, as they can help you identify and correct problems with your data. Common issues may include missing or incorrect data, duplicates, or formatting errors.
To better understand these errors, let's delve deeper into the details using the example students below.
Duplicates
In the example below, we purposely duplicated the record of Chris Student in rows 1 and 2.

Importing this data will result in the duplicate error message we see below.
To correct this, simply locate the duplicate data in the import file and correct it. You can then re-run the import and confirm issues are resolved.
Missing or Incorrect Data
In this particular example, we intentionally omitted Chris Student's username.
Importing the data will result in the error below which requests you to double-check all students have information.
To fix the missing data issue, review the import file and fill in any information that might be missing for any student being added. Save the file if necessary, re-run the import, and check for error messages to ensure the problem is resolved.
Other Errors
For other errors such as password and username requirements, simply click Start Over. You can then correct the data as needed and repeat the steps.
