Changing Video Playback Settings

Changing Video Playback Settings

Each course video comes with a set of playback controls in the bottom bar of the video viewer. These controls allow users to individually change aspects of how the video plays and customize the experience to suit their learning needs.

This article shows users the options available and how to adjust them.

Playback Speed

You can adjust how fast the video plays using the playback speed functionality. This allows you to slow the video down if it's too fast, or speed the video up if it's too slow. You can also adjust this speed at any time to suit the content of the video.

This functionality is represented by a number (representing how fast the video is playing) and "x" . By default, it will say "1x".

You can slow the down all the way to 50% of the normal speed, or speed it up 250% of the normal speed.

Note that we DON'T recommend faster playback speeds in areas with slow internet connections.

Subtitles

EVERY video lesson comes with optional English subtitles. This can be turned on or off via the CC icon in the video menu bar.

If the CC are not to your liking, you can select the captions settings to change them.

This will allow you to change the text to your liking.

Note we do not currently offer subtitles in other languages at this time.

Video Quality

Depending on your local streaming conditions, you may need to adjust the video quality to prevent buffering. This can be adjusted via the gear icon on the video menu bar.

This said, we recommend leaving the quality to Auto, as this will find a suitable speed in most situations.

Fullscreen

Represented as a broken square on the video menu bar, the Fullscreen option allows you to display the video on the entire screen (vs. as embedded in the browser). You can toggle this as you please, and use the the ESCAPE (ESC) key to exit Fullscreen mode.

Volume

Like many video players, you can adjust the volume of the video itself using the speaker icon in the video menu bar. This allows you to find a comfortable volume without adjusting the volume for the entire computer.

Video Skipping

Our video player also allows you to skip 10 seconds back and 10 seconds forward using the curved arrow icons on the video menu bar. This can be useful when you need to rewind a bit or seek something further along in the video.

Hot Keys

As long as the video is focused, the video player is also compatible with standard video playback hotkeys. These are:

Key(s)
Action
Space Bar
Toggles playing and pausing
M Key
Toggles muting and unmuting
Up and Down Arrow Keys
Adjust the video volume
Left and Right Arrow Keys
Seek back and forth through the video
F Key
Toggles Fullscreen mode
Number Keys
Skips to a specific percentage of the video (0 = 0%, 9 = 90%)
